HeatSinks - lets explore

A heat sinkis a passive heat exchanger that transfers the heat generated by an electronic or a mechanical device to a fluid medium, often air or a liquid coolant, where it is dissipated away from the device, thereby allowing regulation of the device's temperature.

What is a heatsink in our computers ? In our laptops or desktop heatsink is a piece of metal that sits on top of a CPU and draws power away from components. These are mostly passive; they have no moving parts. However, in most cases--especially with desktop CPUs and GPUs--the heatsink is combined with a fan that blows the hot air away and sometimes have a liquid cooling solution that carries the heat away through pipes.

What is a heatsink made of ? Heat sinks are electronic devices that are made of good thermal conducting material and are usually attached to electronic devices to dissipate generated heat. These come as either Active Heatsinks or Passive Heatsinks. These are generally made of aluminium alloy or copper.

What is science in heatsink ? Heat sinks absorb heat generated by electronic components and chips, which are used in electronic devices. A two-phase forced-convection cooling process is one of the most effective thermal management methods for high-heat-flux/high-power electronic devices.

How does heatsink work inside a computer ? Heat sinks disperse heat from another object, so they are called heat sinks. Heat is carried away from the CPU into fins that provide a large surface area for the heat to dissipate throughout the rest of the computer, thus cooling both the heat sink and the processor at the same time.

Does a computer need heatsink to work ? Yes, definitely!! It is always necessary to have a properly functioning and seated heatsink in order to operate a computer efficiently. As a result, the processors we have in our computers and laptops today are very powerful and generate a lot of heat.

Do heatsink really work ? By increasing the surface area of a hot device, heat sinks are able to divert heat away from it. The temperature of a heat sink must be higher than the surrounding environment in order for it to work properly.

How does heatsink keep computer cool ? Heatsinks absorb heat from the CPU or GPU that they are attached to. Heat is transferred from the CPU or GPU to these fins when it is warmed up using a fan. As the heatsink is being cooled, air is circulated through a fan. In reverse, the fan draws the hot air away from the CPU and GPU, thus reducing the power consumption.

Can our machines work without a heatsink ? Today’s processors create so much waste heat that they will be able to shut down automatically in a few seconds. If you run your CPU without a fan and heatsink, it will be fried, and you can argue with Intel all you want, but they won’t replace it when it’s fried.
